Reginald A. Hoyt

 
 
Reginald A. Hoyt  is a mammalogist,  conservationist,  and educator who has received international recognition for his efforts to preserve wildlife and their habitats. Reg Hoyt has served in curatorial positions at the Central Texas Zoo, the Audubon Zoological Gardens in New Orleans, and the Phoenix Zoo. In 1996 he became the vice president for conservation and science for the Philadelphia Zoological Society.   During his stewardship, the Society’s conservation and science division expanded to include  programs in more than 30 countries.
 
Throughout his professional career, Reg Hoyt has found time to devote his services to worthwhile organizations and initiatives.  Since 1999 he has served on the Board of Directors of the Wilderness Club of Philadelphia, and is currently serving on the Executive Committee of the Bushmeat Crisis Task Force. Reg Hoyt has also served on committees for the AZA, the American Society of Mammalogists, and the World Conservation Union.  In addition to his other professional activities, Reg is currently serving as the co-chair of the Dept. of Animal, Biotechnology & Conservation at Delaware Valley College.
 
In recognition for Reg Hoyt’s contributions to conservation he has received American Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) awards for his work involving black-footed ferret, and Puerto Rican crested toad conservation.  In addition, he received from AZA the “Adopt Sapo” conservation achievement award, and the Ridrigues fruit bat conservation achievement award.   Further, in 1997 Reg Hoyt received the Conservation Consortium award for his “Trees of Life” program in Guatemala.
 
As a result of Reg Hoyt’s scientific investigations he has published numerous papers and reports and has written chapters for various books; including a co-authored chapter on the Giant Pangolin which will appear in Vol. 5 of the Mammals of Africa, Academic Press. In addition to Reg’s publications, he has been the recipient of grants from a number of organizations; including: the United States Fish and Wildlife Service African Elephant Fund, the Columbus Zoo Conservation Fund, International Union for the Conservation of Nature, and the Panaphil Foundation.
 
In 2003 Reg Hoyt cofounded Forest Partners International (FPI) and assumed the position of President and CEO. Under his leadership, FPI has engaged in wildlife management and community-based conservation in Liberia and in Cat Ba Island, Vietnam. In both Liberia and Vietnam, FPI collaborated with other international conservation organizations to promote public awareness regarding the plight of species and their habitats, to conduct ecological and socio-economic surveys, and to help train students so that they can effectively address the conservation and rural development needs of their communities.
 
Originally from Maine, Reg Hoyt received his B.A. (cum laude) from Nasson College, Springvale, Maine, and his M.A. from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas. Reg has also taken coursework toward his Ph.D. at Arizona State University. Currently Reg lives in Flourtown, Pennsylvania with his wife Laura and their three cats.
